Thankful Series

Today, I am thankful that my husband was able to go to two grocery stores for me.

He was able to buy 10 lbs of chicken leg quarters for $2.90 (an unheard of price in this area!),  12 pounds of clementines for $12, 10 cans of evaporated milk for $10 ($1 a can), 60 pounds of pasta at $0.49 a pound, 30 cans of green beans for $0.49 a can, 2 gallons of whole milk for $2.59 a gallon, 4 packages of sausage for $1.49 each, and Fuji apples for $0.79 a pound.

I’m also thankful for the sweater I bought for myself for $0.25 at a garage sale last month. We’re having the colder than normal weather for the month, as I read our area would have (I know many of you are having warmer than normal and have actually been warmer than here!)  and I was happy to have a sweater to wear.

What are you thankful for today?

  1. Wow, that is a great price on the chicken. The best price I have seen in our area in ages is 77 cents a pound. I got 10 pounds at that price. The breast are on sale now for 99 cents a pound. I got 12 pounds of those.

Today my husband brought home a spiral sliced ham that was a gift to him. He is in charge of hiring the cleaning crew of the building in down town Austin that he manages. The crew gave him the ham for Thanksgiving. We are tickled with it because now I do not have to buy one for Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for a calm day. No storms today. A much need day.

  2. Wow! What great grocery prices and help picking it up!

I am grateful that I was able to take an early morning walk this morning to my local park. The sun was just coming up over the mountains and the sky was a beautiful red. The park has a pond in it and it seemed the colors were most intense when I was passing in front of it. I stopped for a few minutes of reflected wonder.

  3. Can you tell us which grocery stores he got these bargains at? We have a Winco here and wondered if that was one of the stores.

  4. Brandy, I think of you often and pray you are healing. I am also having some mobility and pain problems with tendonitis in my ankle. It is very painful but as I tell my friends…I may be “down” but I’m not “out”. There are many things that can be done from my sofa with the support of loving friends and family. It is a wonderful time to reflect on our blessings.
Thank you for this blog. It inspires me in so many ways and always reminds me to count my blessings. ☺️

  5. That is an amazing price on the chicken! I haven’t seen it so low around here for years. How many meals can you get for your family out of 10 lbs? Are you able to send him for another bag, or does everyone only get 1?

I am filling in the gaps in my storage right now. Between the food I’ve preserved, and what I’ve been buying, I’m feeling like I’m well-stocked. I’m thankful for that feeling. Right now, we are in good condition, even with my husband’s job loss. I’m afraid it won’t be as great when our severance package runs out, so I’m preparing now. I’m blessed to be able to do that.

I’m thankful for someone who sent us a $100 gift card for Fred Meyers in a nice card. Tonight, someone else stopped by with a gift card for pizza (which was really out of their way since we live way out in the country). It’s nice to know that people still care about us, and I’m very thankful for that.

  6. I assumed YOU made the list, Brandy, when I read your post! 😉 What a blessing that your husband is reliable and can do the shopping when necessary. Were you disappointed that you could not purchase the bargains yourself? Food shopping is the one form of buying I look forward to the most, as I take great pleasure in checking off my list and seeing how much money I saved by carefully planning and shopping the sales. I hope and pray your tailbone is healing quickly. I have been thinking of you!

  7. Michaels is having a huge yarn sale. So today I bought 33 skeins of yarn (worth $180) for $48 with free s&h. With Christmas coming up I plan on making 3 blankets, 5 scarves and hats, 1 shawl, and 2 pairs of socks.

  8. That is wonderful. My husband is always willing to shop for me too but he always comes home with lots of treats! Haha I gues he deserves it for a job well done.

Today I am thankful that my brother found a job. He was unsure of what to do after graduating and I could see him struggling. He came for dinner with more self confidence and I’m proud of him.

  9. Hi Brandy & all from Australia and wow what a wonderful price for chicken quarters, I wish they had those sorts of prices here in Australia.

Today I am thankful that I got our 2 bottles preferred branded mouth wash for $3 a bottle saving $5.98 on usual prices, and 2 tins of lychees which are usually to dear for me to warrant getting @ $2 tin saving us $2.60. We are now fully stocked on our personal items before Christmas.

A wonderful blessing as we try hard to stay away from the supermarkets at Christmas time, as people tend to be grumpy, quite manic, and even as we have noticed drive around the car parks the wrong way and fight others for car parks. To which when it happens I tell the person who took my car park I had been waiting for, to have a nice day :p, they have absolutely no way of dealing with nicety instead of anger and give you the strangest look.

  10. I am thankful for being able to save enough money to buy two JOI lanterns. They are amazing and help save so much money. Now the bills are about half and I can afford it. My mothers bazaar this weekend. Found a purse for oldest daughter-nine west paid .50 cents. 2 Amish books for $ 1.00 and a metal cooling rack for 10 cents. We wait all year for this one bazaar.

  11. I am thankful that it has finally stopped raining. I was able to start the yard cleanup and leaf raking. The dog got a much needed fun walk and she was gamboling like a lamb just let out to pasture! I guess animals get cabin fever too.

  12. I am thankful for a sweet husband that helped me get the church fellowship hall ready for the church Thanksgiving last night.

  13. Today I’m thankful I have enough money in the bank to do one months food shop and the knowledge to make taste, healthy meals with what I buy.

  14. Meijer’s and Kroger have started their Thanksgiving specials. At Meijer’s you can get a turkey for 52c a lb, w a $20 purchase. I’m thinking about going back for one or two more. It’s just me and my daughter. I can bake one to portion and freeze. It would last a bit. The whole birds will keep in deep freeze. Kroger has a 99c a lb turkey, w a $10 purchase. I did go to Kroger, but they have boxes of pasta for 49c, when you buy 10. They had sent me coupons w a free peanut butter and bag of frozen vegetables. I was taking off the pb one and realized they had 60c off two of the pasta that is on sale. Score… 10 boxes for $4.30. And I got a free peanut butter. They also have 1/2gal milk for 4/$5.

  15. I am thankful for laughter and the ability to find humourous moments in life. There’s nothing better than sharing a good laugh…Priceless!!!

I’m glad you were able to find some excellent stock up prices for groceries, Brandy! Definitely worth being thankful for.

  16. There was no limit on bags, but I have no more room! I don’t even know what I am going to do for turkeys. We are working on eating down the food that we were given (especially the prepared stuff that we were given, as it takes up a lot of space in the freezer. It has been very nice to have, however, and makes it so that my family can spend a little less time making meals and still tend ot some of their regular responsibilities.

The other thing is that this chicken has been previously frozen. It’s still mostly frozen, though (in one big 10 pound lump) so refreezing wouldn’t be the best thing. I don’t know how many meals it will make; I don’t normally buy this cut, but the price was amazing and I didn’t want to pass it up!

  17. Tami,

Since Winco doesn’t send out ads, I have no way of knowing what their sales are unless I go, and I can’t sit yet (therefore no trips in the car) so that is a problem. However, check their prices on apples and potatoes. Thy should be good this month–possibly on cranberries and onions as well.

Yesterday was the last day of the sale ads–however, Smith’s (where we got most of these deals) is continuing several this week as part of their buy 10 sale. Smith’s is a Kroger affiliate so you might have a store in your area doing the same sales. Pasta, evaporated milk, and green beans will be the same price this week. Canned cream soups are also part of that deal. I also saw canned pumpkin for $1 a can in the ad that starts this week. They also have milk on sale for $2.59, but that doesn’t include whole milk. Another great price this week–boneless pork loin roast for $1.99 a pound.

  18. I am thankful for our Heavenly Father that we can pray to for healing. I don’t know why, but in the last two weeks there have been so many people I know who have had cancer diagnosis, pre-term labor, a diagnosis of fatty liver disease and some other issues. So my prayer list just keeps growing (Brandy, you and your healing are on my list as well). Have a blessed day, everyone.

  19. Brandy,

I do sincerely hope that you feel better very soon. I had two herniated discs in my lower back in 2009 and still remember with great clarity the terrible pain I was in. Back injuries are among the worst; I truly hope that yours begins to heal soon and that you get relief from your pain. How wonderful that you have a beautiful family that helps take care of you! You have taught them well by caring for them so beautifully over the years.

I am thankful for having my kids home from school for Veteran’s Day. I miss them being away from while they are at school and having a peaceful day to spend with them and reflect on how blessed our nation is to have brave people who serve in the military to keep us safe is a true blessing.

Feel better, hon; thank you for keeping up your blog even during this time of trial.

  20. Today I am thankful that the car dealership we use has a free shuttle service. My car is int he shop getting a pump replaced & some maintenance done, & instead of sitting in the waiting room for 4 hours, I can be doing things that need done here at home.

  21. I am thankful for the new baby alpaca on our farm. He is so fun to watch as he frolics about. They are sweet pets and make me smile.

  22. Brandy-
You are getting a lot done even while in so much pain! Even the grocery bargain-planning, etc, as well as all your posts here are more than many people can get done when in full health. Amazing you are able to work on gifts that require you to get out of bed. You are such an inspiration! And although it would be far better if you are not injured, I am sure you are teaching your children so much of a new life skill — of how to get through an extremely painful injury and still get other things done.
I am guessing you have a broken tailbone, but very much hope I am wrong. My elderly mom bruised her tailbone last year in a terrible fall on the winter ice (which also cracked the back of her skull), yet she was able to gingerly sit on certain furniture after less than a week, even though it was very uncomfortable. She did find soaking in a warm bath to help alleviate the pain, too. I hope I am wrong, though, and you just have a bad bruise…
I hope you will allow any friends or extended family to help you in any way they offer… wish we, your grateful readers, were all local and could help you as you help us with your beautiful blog and website all year long!

  23. I am thankful for the beautiful day before the storms come in so I can get the leaves into the garden before the winds. Lake Michigan is forecasted to have 15+ foot waves tomorrow and Friday! It’s going to be interesting to take the puppy out – she hates the cold wet grass as it is.

  24. I am thankful that my doctor was thorough when I went back for my follow up from my lumbar procedure and noticed I was favoring my right arm. He realized I had threw my scapula out and pinched the tendon under it and was starting to do damage to the rotator cuff and bicep also. Put me in his schedule as an emergency and I go back in 2 days.

  25. Hi Brandy and it is a true blessing that I too have a husband who I can give a list to and he picks up bargains for me as well.

I am the person who makes the list in our home too. My husband has short term memory loss from both head injuries, dealing with pain, and PTSD from his time in the military and the injuries he sustained in a terrible 2 vehicle tank accident where only 2 people survived, my husband being 1 and only 1 other in the tank.

So I am thankful that we can work around these things by having a structured order and lists. I am blessed that my husband is still here, is more than willing to do it, and is able to pick up our specials when he is in town on other errands. We try to limit grocery shopping and buying specials to when we are going into town on other errands only, and combine tasks so that we can do 3 or 4 things at once to save us both time and car fuel expenses.

  26. I can’t remember what price range you were going to get turkeys at, ours are down to .59lb. I think that’s pretty good for the store brand. How are prices in your area? Hope you are feeling better day by day.

  27. That price IS so amazing. I wonder if you bought a bag, thawed and cooked it immediately, and picked the extra meat off the bones after cooking, and froze the chunks, if there might be room for a few baggies? Also, if you just bought a bag, cooked it and had it for dinner one night, saved the rest for a couple of days later, made soup one day, etc.– until it was gone? Just a thought. 29 cents/lb. is a lot of meat for less than $3 and usually food is good for a week after being cooked. I’ll bet your crew could eat it up in a week. You could treat it like cooking a small turkey:)

I know that you don’t feel good, though. As good as the price is, you do need to guard your energy for the things that are the most important. Right now, there very well may be other things that are on the top of your list for that little bit of time you get to move around each day. Even directing the children(should you have them cook chicken or anything else) takes energy, no matter how willing they are. Life has seasons. You are in an unpopular one–one where you, as such a busy, energetic, productive person cannot do what you usually can. It will pass, and you will feel so free, light, and happy to be able to do things you used to take for granted. Hang in there! It was a real blessing to have someone give you prepared food to use during this time.

  28. I was talking to my hubby about stocking the pantry. I asked what he thought we should buy if we only had $300 to stock it and didn’t know when we would have more money for it. This MAN who has insisted that I cut back on how much I garden (1400 sq ft that I cut back to 1000 sq ft for next year ) answered GARDEN SEEDS followed by fishing rod (he drowns plastic worms so I know who will be doing the fishing). I asked why not a gun (we have wild game around us) and he said too much money for that limited amt of money, so I thought bow and arrow but we decided trapping would probably be better cost wise… Guess I need to go check my seeds for next year 😉
