Thankful Series

I am thankful for Thanksgiving leftovers. They made my day so much easier and left me with more time to work on other projects.

  1. I really have enjoyed your “thankful” posts for the month of November. Any chance of continuing them in the future? Maybe on a weekly or periodic basis (if everyday is too much)? While I have much to be thankful for, it is inspiring and a great reminder to hear of others’ blessings as well.
I enjoy your blog very much, Brandy! Thanks for all that you do!

  2. I am thankful for the friend who loaned me some book this summer. I told her that I was reading the book “Angela’s Ashes” by Frank McCourt (this was made into a movie but of course the book tells more details). The book is a true memoir of his childhood, growing up poor in Ireland. I expressed how shocked I was he actually survived his childhood. Yet despite this he ended up coming to New York and became a teacher. She actually had his second book “T’is” that told about him coming to America and how he became a teacher, and his third book “Teacher Man” which told about his teaching career which she loaned me. I highly recommend all three to read.

She also gave me another book to which she said “…if you like those books, you’ll like this one”. The book is called “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls and is also a true memoir of her crazy childhood growing up around the desert areas of California, Nevada, and Arizona. I can’t put it down..it is so jaw dropping dysfunctional!

I am so thankful to the authors of these books for sharing their painful and humourous memories. They have have helped me realize just how important all the small and wonderful blessings are that I provide to my child every single day…stability, love, and the basic necessities of life.

  3. I am thankful that our youngest daughter was able to come & visit. She had to work thru the Black Friday sales, so this weekend is her “Thanksgiving” with us.

  4. I’m thankful that my family was able to volunteer on Thanksgiving for an organization that feeds our community regardless of income. The amount of volunteers actually outnumbered our guests. It was great to be a part of so many giving back.
Tomorrow is a big day for me as I have an interview for a job that will bring in a much larger paycheck and still allow me to homeschool.

  5. I am thankful for the extras I stocked in my freezer with the Thanksgiving sales. I will be enjoying my .48/lb turkey for Valentines Day.

  6. The pictures you posted of the flowers for Thanksgiving reminds me of a Dutch/Flemish Renaissance painting. I just had to say how lovely they are again- because they are some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen of flowers in my entire life. They are something to behold to my eyes! “True art is something you never get tired of looking at”, per my art instructor from college.

I am thankful for the restful day I had on Friday(because of the leftovers) and for being able to loaf all day! Like always and everyday, I am thankful for my family. Today, the weather was perfect and I am thankful it has warmed up a little here.

How do you prepare those red string beans? Do you have to shell them or can you cook them like string beans? Does your family like them?

I wish you would post more recipes that you make for your family.

  7. So many things to be thankful for this past holiday that it is hard to count. We had all of my husband’s sisters and brother together since their mother’s funeral more than 5 years ago. (they live in different areas of TX. so it is a big deal to get them all together at the same time. We picked pecans and shelled them while we talked around a table and our children and grand children played. The one big BAD thing that happened was almost terrible; I like to believe that the Lord showed me what to do because I was the one who kept their head and was able to get it ‘fixed’ with the least amount of worry to all. My sister in law’s little dog, (she is very close to the dog since her husband left her) was under a rocker trying to get a piece of turkey dropped by a little boy. Somehow his head got caught and his eye popped eye out his head. I knew how to stop the bleeding and got the number to an emergency vet. I also was able to cover the cost for my sister in law who is going through a very hard since her divorce. (she will pay me back later) So all in all it was a good day. Then the next morning to “pay” me back the little monster bit me in the face while Janna (my sister in law) was trying to put the medication on his eye *his eye was removed and sewed up* My chin is a swollen mess right now, but I hold no grudge against the dog. He was in pain and scared. Glad it was me and not a child. It is going to take 2 people to put the drops in his eye and give him the medication. Now we know he must be muzzled. He had never bit anyone before so we had no idea he would do what he did.
We are so blessed. We were together. We had a great time. We caught up on all the news and made plans for Christmas.
    Blessing to all of you.

  8. I have 4 1/2 months worth of menus on the site (under Cook, look at the menus for each season and the strictly pantry menus) with meals that we regularly make. I also have recipes under the Cook section; look under recipes.

The red beans are just like regular green beans; I steam them.

  9. Poor pup! We have a couple blind or half-blind dogs in our neighbourhood. One neighbour’s gorgeous old dog has cataracts and very limited vision in one eye; another neighbour has an ancient dog who is completely blind, having lost one eye to an infection and the other to another dog’s sharp claw that just happened to come down at exactly the wrong place. They are both doing well and get around just fine, despite the vision problems. I’m sure your sister in law’s dog will be fine too, once he adjusts to his new vision.

  10. Oh my word…what a traumatic experience for everyone, especially your SIL’s poor fur-baby and you! It is a good reminder that no matter how nice an animal normally is, if they are in pain and/or scared, there is always the potential for a bit. I certainly hope everyone is feeling better soon.

  11. Rhonda, if you are enjoying “The Glass Castle” (as I certainly did) make sure you check out her second book “Half Broke Horses” which tells the story of her grandmother. Truly a remarkable woman!

  12. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I am reading through this book very quickly as it is so fascinating! In fact, I keep going to bed at midnight because I keep saying “just one more chapter”. I would love to read more about her family. I am definitely going to try and find her second book!
