Steve 50th birthday The Prudent Homemaker

When I was a teenager, my parents used to watch the televsion show, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. I remember being so impressed by Wayne Brady, one of the actors on the show, and his ability to make up funny lyrics to songs on the spot. At one point I learned that he was married, and I remember thinking that he must make his wife laugh every day. And I thought how fun it would be to have a husband who could make up new and funny song lyrics on the spot.

As it turns out, I did get a husband who does that, almost every day! He sings in the morning and in the evening and makes up new words to songs all the time.

Yesterday my husband found a couple of  comedians on You Tube who are also amazing guitarists, who make up new song lyrics as part of their routine. They were very good, and we laughed a lot. I thought you would enjoy them too:

Mike Rayburn

Tim Hawkins “The Wife Song”

Tim Hawkins “Old Rock Star Songs”

I’m thankful to have a husband who makes me laugh every single day.

What are you thankful for today?

  1. I am thankful for my husband too. He doesn’t make me laugh everyday, but each day his is an example of hard work, dedication, and focus, and trying to do his best for others.

  2. I am thankful that in this season of my life I have more flexible time. Today I will attend a funeral close to where I work. I cherish the people I least expected attending funerals of loved ones of mine.

  3. Your husband sounds awesome! As I type this I’m looking at a framed print on my wall that says “Lucky to be in love with my best friend”, and it’s so true.

Today I’m thankful for the kindness of other bloggers. I just found out that one of my blogging heroes (Christy Jordan of SouthernPlate) is linking up to one of my posts and sending it out to her over 200,000 subscribers. I’m so excited to be included and I really appreciate her kindness and encouragement to other bloggers.

  4. I am so thankful that my daughter has recovered from her major head injury sustained while playing college soccer (a rare yet devastating accident on the field). She is abroad for the semester and yes, her head does bother her still, but she is carrying on. We have become a more God trusting family of fervent prayer and for that I am very thankful.

  5. What a blessing a husband can be…in so many ways. Mine is like that too. Even when the stresses of a wife, a job, and the responsibility of raising 7 children are pressing against him, he loves to make me smile and laugh.

Today I am thankful for my hands and the things they allow me to do and create.

  6. Today I am thankful for my little dog Emmie celebrating her 16th birthday today! She has brought our family so much joy through the years. We know our time with her is fleeting, so we enjoy each day we have with her.

  7. Today I am thankful for all our pets, but especially the 2 youngest – My 1 year old long haired kitty named Hamish and our 1 year old Great Dane Freya. Everyday they make me laugh (and yell……). Hammy, as we nicknamed him, curls up in my lap and grabs my hands if I stop petting him (he actually will start drooling when he is really relaxed LOL) and Freya is overly joyful to see me whether I left the area for 2 minutes or 2 hours, her reaction is the same. Both of them (+ their brothers aka 2 more kitties and the other Dane) follow me around the house and have to be “in on” everything I am doing. And 2 big Dane heads in the way make getting things done a bit more challenging but I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are the reason I get out of bed each morning 🙂

  8. My husband doesn’t sing for me–he sings for the cats! He picks up a cat and jumps it up and down in his arms, making up some silly kitty lyrics, as the wonder what the heck is going on but enjoying it at the same time. LOL I am thankful for a husband who loves the Lord, and even loved me when we first got married and my cat would run out from under the couch and bite him on the ankle! Now they love him, too.

  9. Today I am thankful for the senses. I haven’t been able to smell in about ten years, but I can see, feel, taste (mostly), and hear. I have a lot of back pain but I can still walk, have the use of all of my limbs and can get done what I need to get done with help from my loving family. Everybody smell something good for me today! 🙂

  10. I’m thankful for access to two public libraries where I can check out books, DVDs, and CDs for pleasure and education.

  11. PJGT, I’m so thankful to hear of your daughter’s healing. “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks…” I Thes 5:16-18.

  12. I too am married to the best friend I ever had. He goes out of his way to make me happy. Even after working a long day he comes in and will start the supper for me and will often dust mop the living room floor. (we had a dog that sheds her hair BIG TIME) I dust mop every day. I love him for that….He does not sing, in fact, he is very quite. I often time have to almost force him into conversations. One of the reasons I love driving with him is that he is sitting close to me and I can ‘force’ him into difficult conversations. I know that David is a gift from our Lord to me. He makes me so happy. He keeps me sane. He is just a good man. I am so lucky to be married to him.

Today, I am thankful for him and for his constant love. He shows his love by calling me every morning at 7:00am and 12:00 every day to check in and see how my day is going. He asks me if I need him to stop and pick up something everyday. (often a prescription is ready and he will pick it up on the way home saving a trip out later) He just cares and is constant. Just what I needed when we met 35 years go.

  13. Brandy, I remember that picture of your husband from another post…it was his birthday I believe.

I am thankful also for my husband. He came into my already ordered (I thought) 23 y/o life as a chance meeting (God arranged) to look over the woodworking equipment my mother and her siblings were selling for their Dad retiring from the business. He was only 18 so both parents came with him…he ended up actually buying the whole business and relocating here rather than moving just the equipment over west. I’d decided to come home for lunch that day as all the aunts and uncles would be there and since business transactions are best closed with food there was a big lunch. Long story short he is the best thing that has happened to me. He is very giving, patient, a do-er, energetic, a great Daed and grandpa. As others have said it so well, he’s my best friend.

  14. Cindy S I lost my sense of smell for a year once — then had sinus surgery and it came back. It was hard, so my heart goes out to you. I almost burned the house down once because I couldn’t smell the smoke, and things don’t taste the same when you can’t smell.

  15. My husband makes up funny song lyrics, too.
We met on a blind date and I told him I was first attracted to him because he made me laugh. Tough times are always easier to get through if you can laugh together.
Today I am grateful for friends.

  16. Today I am thankful for this Blog:) I feel so encouraged when I come here. Thank you Brandy for taking the time out of your busy day to encourage others it is a true gift. I do not always have the ability to comment but I always read the posts and comments and have learned so
much and been so blessed by coming here. It has been a hard season but we have so much to be thankful for. Brandy I have Christmas gifts and a stocked pantry because of everything I have learned.

  17. My husband does it too, all the time and he has passed the ability on to our youngest son who is also a musician so we are always laughing about some little song or rhyme one of them has made up. I am thankful for a wonderful family.

  18. I am thankful for the beautiful weather outside. I’ve been keeping my windows open. Went for a drive and enjoyed all the beautiful colors of Fall. Love living in New York with 4 seasons.

  19. Today i’m thankful that my husband’s car troubles were not from a bad transmission. Our savings will take a much smaller hit!
    Loved the video’s!

  20. Today, I am thankful for my job at the pioneer village museum. Not just because I get paid (although that is a perk), but because of all the wonderful opportunities I have been given by working there. I get paid to learn and talk about history, a huge passion of mine. Today, I had the opportunity to learn basketry for a mere $10 (a craft I really wanted to try). A few weeks ago, I learned loom beading for only $12, and I brought home a bunch of supplies so I could make more projects. Of course, I’ve also learned or been encouraged to try many other 19th century crafts, not to mention embroidery, cooking, canning, starting fires from flint and steel, gardening, foraging, etc.

My confidence and belief in myself has grown immensely, since working there. Since starting there, I have acted in a short film, been filmed or photographed for news stories, commercials and documentaries, and even participated in a play 2 years in a row. I never would have done this before. The idea of getting up in front of people or being photographed terrified me!

I love the people I work with. Every summer, I meet new seasonal co-workers, many of which are in college or university training for a wide variety of careers. They are all so interesting to talk to. We always make work fun, too. There are the volunteers, who willingly teach you crafts or pass along new skills. Finally, there are the visitors that come from all over the world to experience our village. They are so interesting to talk to, many of whom share the love of history. It is always such a joy to be there and for that so grateful!

  21. This is a sweet post! I am thankful for my husband too! He is in his last year of vet school and tries to be with us, his family, as much as he can. I know he has a lot on his plate, with school, rotations, clients, studying, but he always tries to be home for bedtimes and sing songs and read scriptures with the kids. He is friendly and outgoing with everyone and that’s what first drew me to him. He has such a fun, positive outlook on life (even though he is determined to become a curmudgeon! Haha!) I just love him and thank the Lord everyday for bringing us together!

  22. LOL First you make me feel horribly old…a teen when Whose Line Is It was on tv! Oh gracious! And I too am thankful for a husband who sings and makes up new words to old songs and write new songs. He is a huge blessing in my life.

  23. In a world with what seem to be so many bad marriages and so many divorces, I, too, am blessed with a husband who has been steadfast, kind and funny for 34 years now. I am coming out of several years of serious illness and there were weeks when he literally had to lift me out of bed to use the bathroom. When I would offer to go to a nursing home he would always say “You’d do the same thing for me.” My reply was always, “But I am not sure I would do it while singing Broadway tunes.” Yup, he is another singing husband only his field of concentration is Broadway songs! I thank God every single day that he came into my life and I fell in love with him even though up until then I had always been attracted to bad boys.

  24. I’m grateful I was able to get a flu shot today.

Our provincial government pays for them for everyone, but I used to get one when I had to pay for it too.

  25. I am especially grateful today for the variety of experiences I have had in my life, including travel to every state except Hawaii so far, plus an entire cross country drive across Canada, and living about two and a half years in England when my husband was in the military. So many things I have seen and done, and almost all of them with my husband and eventually our two daughters. We always camped when the girls came along too, so that they got a taste of travel early as well. Our horizons were broadened enormously, and it’s made it easier to understand many things that go on in the world, having had those experiences. Our nearly 55 years together have been extremely interesting and varied and continue to be so.
Also–follow up from yesterday–yes, daughter and grand-daughter have made their apologies and are speaking politely again. Although I think both should be in time out for a while!!

  26. Today I’m thankful for my chubby 9 (almost 10) month old who recently learned how to hide and reappear from underneath a blanket. It never fails to make who ever she is around stop, smile and play the “Where’s Cora?” game.

  27. Today I am too, thankful for my kind, caring husband of 39 years. This week he has filled my car with gas, changed the battery, and tonight picked up dinner on his way home from work.

  28. Athanasia, I loved your story! I also am thankful for my husband, who make me laugh often, but he is quiet as someone said and sometimes I use our time at the car to start hard conversations. Almost all the time we can get something good of it. We are together for 18 years now and we are still learning to deal with each other. I think this will be a lifetime work 😉
Brandy, I used to watch Whose Line Is It Anyway and I loved Wayne. It was sometimes difficult to understand as it was very fast and they used a lot of expressions but it surely helped me learning English 🙂

  29. I am thankful that I get to vote. With prayer, consideration, and as an educated person, I can vote. Despite the people we can choose from at least we get a choice and can vote them out in the future. So many places in the world that isn’t the case, even more so if you are a woman.

  30. That is indeed a blessing to have a husband who makes you laugh every day! Thank you for sharing the links, and giving us some laughs. I’m thankful for my sister, who I was able to spend time with today.

  31. I am thankful today for our garden. I have been digging the parsnips, carrots & beets, & feeling very grateful for all the food with which the Lord has blessed us.

  32. I’m thankful that I finally taught myself (via youtube) how to knit. My grandma tried to teach me (more than once) 30 years ago, but I just didn’t get it. I’d try again periodically because I would really like to be able to knit, but I just could not grasp the concept and it just made me mad and frustrated. I tried again tonight and for some reason it just clicked. I can now knit and purl – and do it for multiple rows – so I can for sure grow from here 🙂

  33. I will be praying for her. My son got a concussion after a play in football, I am so grateful he is better even after all these years.

  34. I was praising God during a beautiful autumn 22 mile bike ride today. That the parts of my body work so I can ride a bike and be outdoors, physically active.

Also, grateful I have a flexible schedule and a supportive husband so I could go visit my 92 year old uncle who has cancer.

  35. Today I am thankful for beautiful weather, a lovely rain storm this morning, and being able to spend the day with my husband, dog and friends. We had lunch with a good friend of mine today, I was able to take her to lunch, and I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful person as a friend. We have known each other 30 plus years, hard to believe, I look at us and we have wrinkles and look our age ;). Funny, some times I look at my wrinkles and sigh, today I looked at them and was so glad I was able to be alive and see them.

  36. Lol, I make my DD crazy because, for just about anything she can say, I will occasionally break out in a song that her words reminded me of. That, or pull the song up on YouTube and blast it for her “listening pleasure” *wink*. For instance, a couple of nights ago she came in and I saw an asp on her purse, I told her “don’t move, there’s an asp”. (She had no idea what I was talking about.) I took her purse outside and brushed the caterpillar off with a piece of paper. The next time we were discussing the situation, I told her, “I might have saved your life that night”. {Cue Elton John’s “Someone Saved My life Tonight”}, lol, poor girl.
When I DO make up short, silly songs {rhymes}, I add, “see, your mama could’ve been a rapper!” Eye roll. She tolerates me very well. :~D
It’s nice that music and silliness plays such a big part of all of our lives (:

  37. If you ever get a chance to see Tim Hawkins live–GO! He is clean and family friendly and oh so very funny. He does some physical comdey moves that are pure genius. We’ve seen him two times and own several of his dvd’s. It’s not unusual to have a stomach ache from laughing! When doing it live, he does some spur of the moment things. At one show they had an interpreter for the deaf and Tim started saying, “Wow! That Tim Hawkins is the best and he is so cute. I sure hope I can meet him later!” He was standing right behind her just to see what she would do. The audience roared!
