The coolest part of the day is at sunrise. It's 8 The coolest part of the day is at sunrise. It's 89°F/31°C this morning as the sun comes up.

This time of year I don't spend much time outside. Thankfully, the vincas and zinnias don't need me in order to flower--drip irrigation takes care of that.

I'm really liking the Century plant in this location. I repotted it here two weeks ago. I don't have to water it daily, it can handle the sun, and it looks elegant all the time. It's also less expensive than putting annuals in the same spot. This plant was free; it was a baby plant that grew from another that I purchased for $5 at garage sale a few years ago. It will outgrow this spot in a few years, but for now it is a really simple, dramatic solution for this spot. I suspect it will make another baby plant that I can plant in this same pot.

I water this pot (and others) with water captured from inside: shower warm-up water, water left in glasses at the end of the day, water from rinsing fruits and vegetables, and the last rinse water from washing pots and pans. While all water that goes down the drain is reclaimed here, I have to pay for all that I use on a tiered system, so it still makes sense financially to capture as much water as possible. I usually have 6+ gallons a day from indoors to use in the garden.

What plants are your growing now?

June roses are tiny but oh so beautiful! I cut the June roses are tiny but oh so beautiful! I cut these early in the morning before the sun could burn them.

Roses are Desdemona, Spirit of Freedom (the frilly pink ones), Fair Bianca, Scepter D'Isle, and an unknown (mislabeled) rose.

I read several books last week that I enjoyed; I listed them all in today's blog post! Link in bio.

Double rainbow at sunset The rain lasted a full m Double rainbow at sunset

The rain lasted a full minute this time, never wetting the ground completely, but we had a full day of clouds, which is rare for us. It was the first rain we had received in 78 days, and though there wasn't enough to measure or water anything, it was beautiful.

In the desert, when it rains, you open the door and run out to enjoy it while it lasts. It's usually only 20 seconds long, but you go and stand in it before it is gone.

It's such a delight to have the birds returning to my garden this year! They left when we tore everything out and last year when the plants were all so small there still weren't many birds to be seen.

This year they are back! This is a male Lesser Goldfinch enjoying my lettuce seeds. I have waited to pull all the plants while the birds enjoy the seeds.

Iron deficiency is common in desert soils. It's a Iron deficiency is common in desert soils. It's a problem that is evident when you have light-colored leaves (usually yellow) with dark-green veins.

I treat iron deficiency with KeRex and Ironite. The first is a liquid and the second is a granular fertilizer. KeRex is a liquid that can be used while watering plants or used as a foliar spray for quick results.

Ironite takes longer to work, but I use it when fertilizing my fruit trees three times a year. I use it along with soil sulfur to lower the pH of our highly alkaline soils, which gives the trees and plants the ability to use the iron. When the pH of the soil is too high, it is very difficult for the plant to access fertilizer.

I purchase these products locally from @starnurserylv

To learn more about chronic iron deficiency, you can read about it on Star Nursery's website here:
