Today, I am thankful for all progress we have made in the garden.

I am able to plant again with hope for a spring harvest. We missed snow peas this spring. Now, there are new snow pea plants coming up in the garden. Lettuce is coming up, and green onions as well.

I read yesterday about further water reductions that are being discussed between Nevada, Arizona, and California to reduce water usage from Lake Mead. I am happy that we have done our part in reducing our water usage (by 33%) while also being able to grow more.

I’m grateful that we should again be able to harvest much from the garden. Some things will be a few more years before they produce a harvest, but not having to buy those things in the future will be a great blessing to our budget.

Lastly, I am thankful the children are playing outside again. They are learning the fun of the paths that we created and are enjoying being outside in the cooler weather.

What are you thankful for today?

  1. I’m thankful that my husband and I both have grandparents still living. They enrich our lives tremendously and help us remember that there’s “nothing new under the sun”. I’m also thankful for the freedom to homeschool my children.

  2. I’m thankful for the birds I enjoy watching out of my windows. Now that winter is coming and the bears are hibernating, we can put out our bird feeders again and it is fun to see new birds arriving every day.

  3. Thankful for seeds sown in the garden, pansy seedlings planted for winter color and the blessing of high clear blue skies and lovely sunshine to enjoy while planting. Gosh I love the Fall 🙂

  4. I am thankful for a cold front that brought fall-like temperatures and enabled us to open the windows at home.

    1. I second that comment of being grateful for cool weather in Texas. October was a hot month. It did not cool down like it usually does. Finally we got some respite from heat in November. I am grateful for cool crisp evenings & sunny temperate days.

  5. I am thankful that DS and I could find and order a couple things that DH needs for his birthday that couldn’t be found locally. I am thankful that DH had a checkup yesterday and due to the Medicare Welcome Package it is all paid for.

  6. I am thankful that the family of two friends are safe after the terrible storms in BC. One set has been under an evacuation alert since Monday but so far, have been able to stay in their home. The others, my friend’s niece, her husband, 2 little ones under the age of 3 and the elderly in-laws all made it out of Merritt and are sheltering with family in Kamloops. I just pray that they will be able to return home soon.

    1. I saw how bad the roads are. I don’t know how people are going to make it home or how they will get supplies in if they can make it home until the roads are built back. Right now I hear the only way in and out is driving down through the U.S., which is problematic.

      1. I am glad Margie that all the family made it out of Merritt. It is not only B.C. that is affected.
It is also the food supply for Albertans. Much of it from the States comes through B.C. and
also a lot comes from B.C. I though Calgary’s devastating floods of 2013 were bad enough but B.C.’s present floods are far worse — unbelievable! I am thankful I restocked my pantry this summer. Prayers for people in B.C.
The Canadian Prime Minister is in Washington at the moment and arrangements are being made to facilitate travel from B.C. through the States back up to Canada again.

  7. I was thankful to be invited to a potluck brunch where a friend presented her account of eating a whole food plant based diet for the last ten years and the health benefits she gained. While I don’t completely embrace that way of eating, it was a good reminder to try to eat in a more healthy fashion. She gave some good handouts and reminders of what should be in a daily diet and the importance of daily exercise and movement. (Written while enjoying a breakfast of Irish oatmeal topped with cooked spinach–and a little soy sauce for depth of flavor).

    1. Oh, I would have loved to have heard what benefits your friend has seen through the past decade of her healthy eating plan. My husband and I are finishing our 1st year on a fully plant based eating plan, and have noticed many positive health changes. I love suggestions and tips! Thankful you commented here because we were talking about this being from here on out, not just a test. Sounds like it hasn’t gotten old for your friend.

  8. Yay for the new adventures in the garden! Today I am grateful for a sunshiny day so I can be outside a bit to work on fall clean up projects.

  9. I’m thankful for the beautiful fall weather we are having. I’m thankful that we were able to pay off our van a year early. We got a refund of an insurance we had on the note. It will pay for several gifts this year.

  10. I am thankful that my garden has beautiful kale, cabbage, and broccoli plants that are growing. My carrots are almost ready to harvest, and the tomato plants are laden with many pounds of tomatoes that are still ripening, and that I should be able to pick before the first freeze. My pepper plant varieties are still producing many peppers that we eat or freeze while still green, or allow to turn red and dry to be ground into chili powder. I am thankful for the cool front this morning to make it feel more like Thanksgiving. I am thankful that I have dried cornhusk “stars” from baby corn from my garden that I will string with the red, dried chilis to make a pretty harvest garland and yaupon trees with bright red berries to use for our Thanksgiving decorations. I am thankful for kind and caring doctors who are trying to help me get well from a 1 1/2 week-long intestinal infection. I am thankful for lab tests.

    1. Tejas, I grew peppers this year to grind into chili powder but tonight I tried it and it is too hot and spicy for me! Could you recommend a chili pepper I could grow that tastes like chili but does not have the spicy hot flavor?

  11. Today I am thankful for my job. Working from home and having only virtual appearances has changed everything but we adapt and I am grateful for the opportunity.

  12. I’m thankful to be alive. I’m not rich. I’m not young. I’m not beautiful. I’m not always happy. But I have a place to live. I have enough food. I have enough clothes. I have people I love and a some who love me. Every day I try to remember and be thankful for my blessings. I know there are people all over the world who would be thankful to change places with most of us, problems and all. I wish everyone could have enough to live on and the peace to enjoy it.

  13. I am thankful for the owners of the quick stop in our little town of 600. Each year on the Thursday before Thanksgiving they provide free lunch for the entire community; it’s as a Thank You For Your Business. They were so gracious about letting us pick up extra to-go orders for those staying at home during pandemic. Already delivered the extras and had my lunch. So much food I’m saving the cake for later.

  14. I am thankful for a quiet life. We are sitting by the log fire, no TV or radio on, reading books and hearing only the crackle of the logs and the ticking of the clock. How very, very lucky we are.

  15. I’m thankful that dentistry of today is much less painful than it used to be. I had a broken crown removed and a temporary put in today. The idea of doing that without any anesthetic is terrible. I’m also very thankful to whomever it was that invented the numbing gel for gums so that dental injections aren’t the pain-filled ordeals they used to be.

  16. I am grateful for the community associated with this blog. I spend very little time on-line, using it for research primarily. However, I find the encouragement and sharing here very helpful. It is a little spot of kindness in a format that can be very much the opposite. Thank you!

  17. I am grateful that my two children got to listen to our new baby’s heartbeat today. They are super duper excited and it’s made all the hardships of this pregnancy seem less bad to know that this baby will be such a gift to our whole family. Now she just needs to hurry up and get born already!

I am grateful also for the opportunity to have my antenatal appointments at home. The hospital for our first child was not very accommodating at all to my personal preferences. This one (same as the second baby) has bent over backwards to make me feel comfortable and valued as a patient through a very difficult time. It certainly looks less flashy as a building, but the staff are phenomenal and I look forward to writing my post-birth thank you cards to them – though it’ll be a challenge to be effusive enough!

  18. I am thankful that we have a little grandchild and that he lives only a few hours away. I’m thankful for the phones and internet that keeps our small family connected across the miles.

  19. I’m grateful for sunshine and to have my husband working from home today so we could get outside and enjoy it at lunchtime. You have had such beautiful peonies in your pictures this week. Do they bloom for you this time of year?

    1. They are roses! Peonies burn here, though I am trying a couple of very early bloomers. They still tend to burn. It also doesn’t get cold enough for them here.

  20. Today I am thankful for a day to reassess my finances and what is important in life. Also thankful for my Mum who taught me never to waste anything, I made a warming, nutritious soup from leftover chicken and vegetables.

  21. Every winter, i am grateful for electric blankets. The wind is howling and we can crawl into a preheated bed. Such a luxury.

  22. I’m thankful for a friend inviting me over to make passion fruit jam. She supplied all the fruit and the sugar. I came home with 6 1/2 pint jars of passion fruit jam, and also 2 jars of marmalade that she had made and a beautiful trombocino squash. I feel rich!

  23. I am thankful for my library and the great people that work there. They go beyond to help. Best bargain in town!!

  24. Brandy, I am thankful for the short blurb you wrote yesterday about keeping our vaccination opinions to ourselves as well as remarks about countries other than our own. After a couple of remarks that I have read, I really wanted to reply, but knew it was not the thing to do. You said it better, anyway.

  25. I am thankful that I was able to find half price iron supplement tablets for DH in the supermarket today saving us a substantial amount of money 🙂 . Thankful also that we were able to find a few cartons of each of the mangoes and lychees on the supermarket shelves to stock up our walk in pantry with.

  26. I am grateful for the other adults invested in my children – grandparents, teachers, clergy and friends.
