Thankful Series

In this season of Thanksgiving, I’ll be posting every day this month on a reason for which I am grateful that day.

Today I am thankful that my husband was able to go pick up a beautiful chest of drawers yesterday afternoon for me. I found this piece on Craig’s List weeks ago. I called on it (only a phone number was listed; no other contact info was there) and left two messages, but never heard back. I figured I was too late and the piece was sold, but then I got a phone call from the seller on Friday afternoon, who listed it for sale and then left the country! The piece didn’t have a price (it said make offer) and on the phone the seller was going on and on about paying a lot for this antique. (Antique pieces are rare here; most of this city was built in the last 20 to 30 years). I figured he wanted too much for it. I told him what I was hoping to pay, and to my surprise, he said yes!

Ezrom helped me move things out of the other piece of furniture I had in the sewing room, and Winter and Cyrus took in into another room. Then Cyrus and my husband carried this beautiful piece into my sewing room yesterday afternoon.

I’m so glad he was willing to go get it for me. I couldn’t make the drive (40 minutes each way)  and I’m grateful that my children could help me to move things when I could not.

What are you thankful for today?

  1. I am thankful for being able to see a friend today I have not seen for a while (at least a couple of months).
We went out to have a coffee and just walked around the neighborhood. It was an afternoon full of laughter and I definitely needed that 🙂

  2. Beautiful piece Brandy! I would put it at mid to late 1930’s to 40’s. I am on the hunt for a dresser too, hope I have the same luck as you!
    Blessings,
    Suzanne

  3. Since my husband lost his job, I’ve been deliberately looking for ways to count my blessings each day as well. I’m so glad you are doing this. I think it will help me remember to keep counting them.

Today, I was reminded in the sermon of how much we have here in America. I am included in this. I have more clothes and shoes than I can wear out in years. I have never been to bed hungry. I have shelter far beyond what I need and I have many, many things I don’t need at all, I just want.

Even beyond that, the hidden blessing to not having my husband work at a church right now is that we have spent almost every Sunday, since the job loss, with family. We have been visiting the church where my sister’s family and aunt attend. Then, we go to my sister’s house and work on lunch while they help out with the teens during the 2nd service and we all eat together. We each bring/make food sometimes. We just get it ready, get out the dishes, etc. Today, I was overwhelmingly grateful for this privilege. We have never been able to spend time with family on Sundays, except on major holidays, and I was full of gratitude for the gift of time with these precious people, even though it came at a high price.

  4. I love your post and that dresser is lovely! I am thankful for friends and family today- tonight a work friend from my previous employer reached out to me via text and she told me how much I meant to her even though we didn’t know each other really well at our employer due to being on the same team but working in two different states. Her kind words were unexpected and so sweet. I have been watching movies with my daughter today- she is a senior in high school and so busy- these opportunities are not as frequent as they used to be and I will miss this time when she goes away to college so I am thrilled to get days like today. I have been knitting a prayer shawl for my Mom for one of her Christmas gifts and watching movies- a perfect Sunday!

  5. Above all else, I am thankful for my husband. He works hard at a job and then comes home and works hard on the house or yard chores. He is even-tempered, kind and does little things that make me so proud of him—like picking up litter on walks and when we pull into the grocery parking lot he looks around to see if there is a cart he can bring into the store with him because someone left it sitting in a parking space instead of taking the few steps to return it to the cart gathering place. He nursed me through two years of illness, literally lifting me in and out of bed and toileting and showering me when I could not move by myself, dropping his recreational activities and taking a leave from work because I could not be left alone, and always having a cheerful attitude no matter how horrible the day was. I could not be more blessed in a life mate and thank God every day for bringing him into my life and leading me to marry him when I was too young and immature to look for the right things in a prospective husband. I was stupid enough to find “bad boys” attractive and to interpret my husband’s kindness and reasonableness as weakness.

  6. I, too, am thankful helping hands today. Between my husband and my children, I’m truly blessed.

That’s a beautiful piece, Brandy. I’m so glad you were able to purchase it!

  7. I am thankful for my sweet little dog that has stayed right by my side and snuggled with me all week while I have been under the weather.

  8. Such pretty furniture! I am thankful for the hymns we sang at church today. We’ve had lots of rain in Washington, which is marvelous, but I can tell that I need to take more vitamin D and the dark gray days have been long. When we got to church today, we sang some songs that I hadn’t heard before and I was instantly uplifted and joyous. I’ll be listening to those songs this week.

  9. I’m thankful my husband and I had the opportunity to spend Halloween with all 4 of our children–the 2 we birthed and the ones they married 🙂 –and all 5 of our grandchildren, plus extended family and friends of our son and daughter-in-law. We ate around the fire pit, visited, played with the children and went trick-or-treating for the first time with all of our grandchildren (plus the other children there). We’ve had some ups and downs in our family dynamic in the years since our eldest grandchild was born, and the simple pleasure of all being together, doing something so “normal”, warms my heart in ways I cannot put into words.

  10. Wow! What a beautiful dresser!

Today I am grateful for not having to go anywhere as we’re finally getting snow falling again and I don’t have snow tires on my car yet.

  11. Hello Brandy and all from Australia :D.

Today I am thankful that we were able to cut more timber to have enough timber for the next winter ahead. I am blessed that I was guided to the particular spot as we drove along the road to cut timber from the verge. The true blessing was when the farmer who owns the farm behind came out and said that we could have all of the timber from dead and fallen trees from his 59 acre property for free on the small condition that we clear his driving tracks that had been blocked by contractors cutting trees down and leaving them there.

Here where we live if we pay for firewood it is anywhere from $100 – $140 for a 6′ x 4′ trailer load of firewood, and on pensions that is a huge price to pay. We have now cut for just the cost of the fuel for the car 5 minutes from home, the chainsaw fuel and oil, and bought home 4 x 7′ x 5′ trailer loads for such a minimal cost to us and been blessed to be able to offer service to our lovely farmer who has now become a good friend.

  12. I have so much to be thankful for, but today I am thankful for my friends. I got the privilege of seeing a close friend and her husband baptize their two oldest children today. What a beautiful sight! I am thankful that God has put a group of honest, kind, and supportive women in my life. They inspire me to be a better person! 🙂

  13. Wow, that is a beautiful dresser and I like the way you have styled it! Yesterday I was especially thankful for the playfulness and joy that our little dog adds to my husband’s and my empty nester life. She gets us out of our serious selves.

  14. I am thankful for my family – my wonderful husband, sons, DIL’s and grandchildren. I very thankful that we are all healthy.

  15. I am thankful because my daughter and I were able to go visit my mother, who lives two cities over, and we had a great afternoon of coffee and visiting.

  16. I am thankful that my daughter is doing so much better at school this year. There are still moments, but we expect there always will be with having Asperger’s and ADHD. However, I believe the right combination of drugs and maturity are doing wonders for her. For that I am truly grateful!!!

  17. That dresser is just beautiful! I’d love to have it here.

I’m thankful for the extended beautiful weather we are getting here. My family needs outside time, which is tougher for us asthmatics when the weather gets super cold.

  18. I am thankful for the beautiful weather we had (sunny and mid 60s). After being 45 degrees and rainy on Halloween, it was wonderful to enjoy. Walking outdoors in the beautiful weather was a gift, and just as available (and free) as to those who have overflowing bank accounts.

  19. Becky, your post reminded me of when I, like Brandy, fell backwards and put my left arm down to catch myself. I literally crushed my wrist into pieces! My church people were praying for me. The surgeons on call in the emergency room were able to pull the pieces into place. The specialist said later that the surgeon that put my wrist back together did such an amazing job and that if all stayed in place I would not need surgery! No scars, no pins! What an answer to prayer. The pain was intense but I kept counting my blessings each day. My brother had a lung desease at the time and I was able to spend hours with him that I wouldn’t have gotten to had I not had an injury and was off work. I was able to go with him to doctor appointments and and walk along side of him and his wife when the doctors news was bleak. He pasted away a few months later. I have been forever grateful for this time
with him. I will admit I had my days when I was discouraged. So today I am thankful for my God and Family who walk beside me when the going gets tough and rejoice and fellowship with me on the sunshinny days! Brandy, I am praying for you each day!

  20. I am thankful that I have turkey broth and beans to can today. We are making the most out of our food storage. I’m also thankful that I get to teach a Relief Society class in January about using beans. It’s nice to have skills that I can share. 🙂

  22. I am thankful for a lovely November day here in Phoenix, gentle breeze blowing through the house, bills paid, food defrosting in the fridge, and mostly my family (husband and dog) who are both healthy and at home. I echo the words of an earlier commentor about how lucky we are to have what we have here, often I forget to see what I have in the search to see what is missing. Brandy, thank you for this series to remind me of the extraordinary abundance in my life.

  23. I have so much to be thankful for, as well! This weekend, we were able to drive up to the mountains and see our son as he was on his way to training in CA. We got to meet some of the guys he works with and took him and a couple buddies out to dinner at a favorite restaurant. The next morning, we got to watch their helicopters as they took off on the next leg of their journey. I am thankful for their military service and thankful for the fine, responsible young man he is. We also got to enjoy the cool mountain air and see some beautiful fall leaves that we don’t have here in the Phoenix area.

  24. Beautiful dresser, Brandy. Nice classical lines that never goes out of style, therefore a great investment.

Today I’m thankful that our car repair was only the $300 one instead of the $1000 one the mechanic thought might be needed!

  25. Your chest of drawers is beautiful and is the Duncan Phyfe style. Today, I am thankful that when I picked up my prescription from the drug store, and tried to pay for it (I normally pay $50), the clerk told me there would be no charge and that the insurance had covered the entire cost.

  26. I am thankful for the wonderful rain we had. Our part of Texas has been so desperate for water. Some areas were on fire for more than 2 weeks and the rains put the fires out.

I am thankful for my job. I am thankful for the beautiful day we have today. I am thankful for a wonderful blog like yours that makes me remember to be thankful for God’s many blessings.

  27. I’m late to yesterdays posting but I’m thankful for a wonderful day spent with my husband, daughter and her girlfriend wandering around a local antique flea market. We didn’t buy a thing but had a beautiful sunny so. cal morning looking at interesting items with people I love.

  29. Hi Brandy and all, it is for yesterday: I’m grateful for me niece and nephews. We was able to spend some time together and those moments are really precious to me, as I had some important losses on the last years. Brandy, the chestdrawer is beautiful and I hope you get well really soon. Blessings to everybody from Brazil.

  30. Pretty dresser! Reminds me of furniture my Granny used to have. I have a very similar basket suitcase! Do you keep your fabrics and sewing supplies in the suitcases and chest o’ drawers?

  31. I am thankful for music and opportunities to learn new things. I’m thankful for the example and influence of friends.

  32. 11-1 I am thankful for my faith community and the freedom to gather together and worship without impediment. I am thankful for a wonderful day at church (Sunday) with visiting speakers, visiting missionaries and their family, a delicious potluck luncheon, new baby dedications.

  33. Brandy, it looks like the one drawer has a bit of wear under the handles…you can rub it with a walnut meat. (It also could be a trick of the light.) It is a wonderful find for you.

  34. This is for Sunday…a little late which is normal for me. I was thankful for the warmer temps and bright sunshine and a chance to enjoy my quilting while watching my daughter and my grandson play. They have come to live with us and are a ray of sunshine everyday.

  35. I am so distressed to read that you have taken a bad fall. I have searched your blog to find a mention of what happened but cannot find it. I hope you didn’t break a hip or your back. So sad! But thankful for your supportive family, and for all the blessings you so richly deserve.

  36. Brandy, I am praying for you. I know it must be very difficult to rely on others (I know you are a “can do” woman!”) especially this time of year. I’m praying for a speedy recovery and that God will reveal himself to you in a very special way.
